Melaka Trip Day 1

I had a really great and fun food trail to Melaka, Malaysia during the Easter long weekend last week with my girls and the hubbies. 

It was an impromptu trip and we went off without much planning, which I think added on to the fun. Lucky for us, we had a very dependent 'tour guide', Mr. D :)

We set off our adventure early at 6.30 am on Friday to beat the traffic jam. 

After a quick breakkie at Johor and hours of driving, we finally reached Melaka at 1 pm. Teehee.

We had our first lunch at Mei Sin Cafe. It is located beside Ramada Hotel and below Ng Fook Hotel. The address is 154 Jalan Bunga Raya, Melaka 75100. You may park the car opposite of Ramada Hotel for Ringgit Malaysia(RM) 5 each car.

We ordered other dishes from other stalls. Deep fried fish balls and yams (RM 10). These are super yummy.

Roasted chicken (RM 15), nice but a bit salty to my liking.

We headed to the hotel for check-in and quick rest after lunch.

We stayed at Venus Boutique Hotel this round. The hotel is located at 18 Jalan PM 6, Plaza Mahkota, Melaka 75000.

The hotel room is cozy and comfortable. And most importantly, it is affordable. We booked it at SGD 73.50 for a night. On top of that we need to pay RM 2 for heritage charge per room, per night.

They also provide complimentary wireless connection in both lobby and inside the room.

After showering and quick rest, we were recharged and ready for our next food coma at Klebang coconut shake

The coconut milkshake topped with vanilla ice-cream. This is the BOMB. 
The drink is so refreshing for the scorching hot weather and it is not too sweet.
The price for a glass of coconut shake special (with ice-cream) is RM 2.20 and coconut shake regular (without ice-cream) is RM 1.70

They also have assorted local snacks. We ordered Keropok Lekor (fish sausage) RM 1 for 3 pieces. Keropok Lekor is a specialty from Terengganu, another state of Malaysia. I first had it when I studied in Penang and I fell in love with it immediately. I always order whenever I see it. However, it is quite difficult to get nice ones nowadays. The best keropok Lekor that I have ever had was in a small coffeeshop when I visited Terengganu for a business trip years ago.

Nasi Lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk). RM 1.20 for a packet.

We paid only RM 15.40 for four glasses of coconut shake with icecream, 9 pieces of keropok lekor and 3 packets of nasi lemak. It was reasonably-price and good. We will definitely come back.

We then decided to go Mahkota Parade not only to shop, but also to escape the sweltering weather.
And chilled out at one of my favorite cake shop, Secret Recipe.

Dinner for the day was at Handsome Restaurant, which is located opposite Methodist Girl School at Jalan Tengkera. 
Heard from Mr. D that the black pepper and chili crabs are nice.
Unfortunately, they didn't cater any crabs that day :( 
Booo, was kinda sad cos I was craving for crabs. 
But anyway, we will definitely visit this restaurant the next time we come to Melaka.

Pig stomach soup. This is my all time favorite soup. The broth was extremely peppery and I loved it :)

 The signature fried bee hoon. It was really really good and it was gone in seconds :p

We ordered another soup. This is so interesting. The herbal soup was served in a wintermelon. How creative. I love this soup. In fact, I love anything cooked with herbal :p

The total cost for the dinner and drink was RM 72.70 which is quite reasonable.

Mr. D brought us to try a putu piring (kueh tutu) nearby the restaurant at 250 Jalan Tengkera. 
Look at the huge size. It is selling at RM 1 per piece

We went to catch a movie at Dataran Pahlawan, partly was because we wanted to have supper but we had nothing to do in between :D

The movie ticket price is only RM 10 for a weekend midnight show.

The chicken meatball tasted yucky, will never ever order this again -.-'

Headed to Restoran Pak Putra Tandoori & Naan at Jalan Laksamana 4 for supper after the movie.

Mango lassi is also one of the items I always order whenever I visit Indian stall or restaurant. It is made of yoghurt, water and mango pulp. It was really good and not sweet at all.

Palak paneer (spinach with cottage cheese). I was a bit disappointed because I expected to see the cottage cheese but it was pureed together with the spinach. Nevertheless, it tasted really good.

Aloo Gobi. It is made with potatoes, cauliflower and Indian spices.

Garlic and cheese naan served with curry sauce. Naan is an Indian style flatbread.

The crazy us were not full yet after the supper and we decided to explore for more food.
Decided to drop by Capitol satay celup because there was no queue. It was 1 am and I believe there were not many people as crazy as us :p
I came here before at 7 pm and had to queue for about one and half hour to get a table.
Restoran Capitol Satay is located at 41, Lorong Bukit Cina, 75100 Melaka.

It is a self service system. You take whatever you wanna eat and they charge RM 0.90 per stick.

Satay celup is a steamboat satay where the meat and vegetables in a skewer are cooked in a thick and aromatic peanut sauce.

Hair is the crowning glory of a woman.

From the discussion, she concluded the two main reasons that caused my hair loss and greasy scalp are the excessive exposure to chemical treatments (coloring, perming and straightening) and sleeping late. 
I usually go to bed very late which is about 2 am and I am definitely missing the beauty sleep time at 11 pm :(

Cherries then performed a scalp diagnostic for me.

From the picture below, it can be seen that there was an excessive sebum on my scalp caused by overexposure to chemicals.

Cherries explained to me that the excess buildup of sebum on the scalp can also lead to dandruff. 

The sebum and dandruff block hair follicle and affect hair reproduction. These are the culprit of my thinning hair issue.

Healthy hair follicle has 2 to 3 strands of thick hair.
However, the scanning results of front side of my head showed that I have only one or two strands of hair and they are thin hair. I was seriously a bit shocked when I saw the result. 
I bet Cherries could sense my worries.
She kept assuring me that they had a solution for me. With a regular hair treatment and home usage products, I will definitely see a visible result in a certain period of time.

I was led to the treatment area by my hair therapist, Ms. Jess Lim.

I like their concept of cubicle treatment area for customers' privacy.

The first part of the treatment was masque application on my scalp as a detoxification treatment for greasy scalp and clogged hair follicles. This treatment was to remove the excessive sebum and impurities such as dirt and dandruff from the scalp.

During the hair deep cleansing at the cozy hair washing area, Jess used a mint shampoo which was suitable for my greasy scalp condition. I love the minty smell and the cooling effect of the shampoo. I almost fell asleep when Jess massaged my scalp. Jess has a very good massage skill. It was so comfortable that I felt like I was doing head reflexology at the same time :D

A shoulder herbal heat pad was put on my shoulder for a complete relaxation before Jess blow-dried my scalp to allow product to be better absorbed by the scalp.

A tonic was applied to purify and rejuvenate my scalp. It was also to help the control of oiliness and dandruff. The tonic application was followed by another heavenly head, neck and shoulder massage and the herbs smell of the tonic added on the the complete relaxation.

Check out the brilliant design of the product. Instead of the usual round shape, it was designed to fit our palm nicely during the usage. And the design of the long dispenser allows the application of product to go directly in contact with scalp instead of just the surface of our hair. I went back to the consultation room for Cherries to ran post-treatment diagnosis on my scalp at the end of the treatment. I was glad to see that my scalp was cleaner after the treatment. 

The obvious result that I noticed was my hair was not oily even after the end of second day and it was still voluminous.
As I mentioned earlier, my hair usually gets oily and smelly in less than a day. This is kind of frustrating where I have to wash my hair every single day or else it will look and smell really yucky. 
I was convinced with just one treatment.
I will definitely come back and get my hair treated regularly to maintain a healthy scalp and prevent further hair loss.

I lost 300 grams in one treatment at Slimming 101!

Few days ago, I had the opportunity to try out the slimming treatment at Slimming 101.

I fell in love with the centre as soon as I stepped my foot in. Look at the girlish decoration, they are so pretty.
I was greeted by the friendly therapist, Nittha.

This slimming centre is quite new, I understand from Nittha that this slimming centre was launched end of 2012. 
Slimming 101 is the sister company of Beijing 101, the renowned hair care treatment centre.

What is interesting from this slimming centre is the combination of both modern and tradtional chinese medicine (TCM) method. 
Slimming 101 the first slimming centre in Singapore that combine the use of TCM with modern method.
I always believe in integrating modern western and Chinese medicine. I myself have been practicing this for a while. I have vitamin and mineral supplements daily and take western medicine when I am sick. On the other hand, I do visit TCM regularly when I feel 'weak' or tired and need to boost up my energy.
Therefore, my eyes lit up immediately when I heard about this integration method to treat weight problem inside out.

I was first led to a cozy and comfortable consultation room and asked to fill a form with some questionnaires for the therapist to fully understand my body condition and my main concerns which are flabby tummy and thighs. I believe this is a common problem faced by a number of girls. 

I was then led to do a body assessment.
According to Nittha, my body weight and fat percentage are kind of ideal :D
My body fat percentage is 29.6% where the ideal percentage for my age and height is in between 21 to 34.9%
However, my total body water percentage is on the high side, which is 48.7% 
The ideal percentage for me will be 30%. I have exceeded 50% of the ideal percentage *facepalm*

I finally got to understand from Nittha about the culprit of my water retention problem. 
Firstly it is because I don't sweat much, not even after a 5 km run. Therefore, the toxins are not flushed out of my body. Accumulation of toxins in body cause poor blood circulation and water retention. Our body system will find a way to protect us from toxins by diluting them and store them in water and fat storage. This is the main reason that we gain weight.
The second reason is my bad habit of drinking excessive water before bed time. 

After the body assessment with Nittha, I met up with the Chinese physician for another round of consultation. 

The physician ran through a diagnostic process with me which included understanding my medical history and lifestyle, observation of my skin and tongue, and pulse taking on both wrists. TCM practitioners believe in six pulse aspects which correlate with body organs and functions.

Nittha then suggested to do a detoxification treatment for me, which included sauna, sea salt scrub and hot blanket, followed by acupuncture.

First of all, I was asked to change into a robe and took a shower to remove the oils and impurities off the body. Before showering, I did another body weight measurement with wearing only the robe. My weight was 53.1 kg (after deducting 400 grams of the robe weight).

I was then guided to the sauna room with temperature at 50°C.
I was initially imagining a closed dark sauna room when Nittha mentioned about going into the sauna. Little did I know that it actually has a bright light and a see through glass door which really help for the claustrophobic me, and I was given magazines to read in the sauna room. This was the first time I felt comfortable sitting in a sauna room. 

I headed to another treatment room for the sea salt scrub treatment and massage. The massage technique was a lymphatic drainage massage for the improvement of body circulation and for toxin drainage in the body. The toxins are then removed via kidney as urine. This massage is useful for combating water retention issue.

After the massage, a hot blanket was used to cover my body. I felt so good sleeping in this warm blanket and bed. I started to sweat after 10 minutes. I cant believe I sweated so much, I felt like I have done one hour intensive workout. I cooled down a bit after the hot blanket treatment and went for a shower. 

I did another body measurement after showering. My after treatment weight was 52.80 kg (after deducting 400 gram of the robe). 
I lost 300 grams after the treatment :D

Here comes the second part of the treatment.
After showering, I went back to the treatment room for the TCM acupuncture. 
I was initially worried about the pain because I have a fear of needles and injections.
However, the physician's skill was really amazing that I only felt a slight tinge sensation when the needles were poked in. 

The physician explained the purpose of acupuncture points along the stomach was to aid digestion, increase blood production and cure gas problem. From the pulse taking, she could tell that I have poor digestion. This explained the bloatedness I experienced after a meal.

The last acupuncture points are on the feet to combat liver blood deficiency. This also explained why I have constant dizziness, dry eyes and insomnia.

I felt rejuvenated and refreshed at the end of the treatment. I was completely satisfied.
I would say that I do not have serious body fat issue but my main problems are the flabby tummy and thighs. 
I have tried to lose weight. However, it wasn't easy to tone down the flabby parts.
What I am really glad from this treatment is also I get to understand the cause of my main concern. 
It never crossed my mind that water retention is the culprit that cause the accumulation of toxins and results in weight gain.

And most importantly, the combination of western and TCM method is what I think makes Slimming 101 stands out. The acupuncture treatment was not only combating my flabby parts issue but also help treating my problem from inside, such as strengthening my digestive system and restoring water balance system. 
Therefore, the integration method of treating weight problem inside out will be able to show the result faster and lasting for longer term.

Mie Kangkung Belacan

This is my first recipe post. Therefore, I am gonna post the specialty food from my hometown, Medan (Indonesia), which is Mie Kangkung Belacan.
This noodle is always in my 'must eat' list whenever I go back to Medan.

The recipe is adapted from whattocooktoday

Ingredients (serves: 2)
200 gram of yellow noodle
Two handful of beansprouts
100 gram of kangkung
3 big prawns (deveined and shelled)
6 fish balls (sliced half)
2 tomatoes (quartered)
2 teaspoon of belacan
4 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
2 eggs
3 tablespoon of red chili paste
2 tablespoon of sweet soy sauce
3 tablespoon of canola oil
1/4 cup of water

Method:
1. Soak the yellow noodle in cold water for a while to get rid of the smell and oil coated on the noodle.

2. Heat canola oil in wok. Saute chopped garlic until fragrant. 

3. Add in prawns and fish ball. Saute until half-cooked, then push to the side of the wok and crack the eggs. Break the yolk a bit and leave it. Let the egg settle for a bit and then mix everything up in the wok

4. Add in red chili paste and belacan. Stir fry

5. Add in water and tomatoes, let it simmer for about 1 minute

6. Add in beansprouts, kangkung, yellow noodles, and sweet soy sauce. Mix well. Cover the wok with lid and let it simmer for 1 minute

7. Remove from heat and serve hot

Tips:

Below is my favorite noodle. I always get my noodles, kway teow and hor fun from this brand. There are no particular reasons on why I love this brand. I first bought it because of the cute monkey logo. Okay, I know I am sucker for cute packaging :p I find them quite nice and the noodles don't have the fishy odor, so i continue buying them. You can find them from either Cold Storage or NTUC Fair Price. I can't remember the exact price but it is around SGD 1 dollar plus.

For the chili paste, you may do it yourself by grinding red chili with a little bit of water in food processor. However, I bought my ready chili paste from Sing Long brand. Unfortunately, I don't have the picture of the chili paste but it is packed in a plastic packet.

My right eyebag is less obvious after the treatment and my jawline is slightly firmer.

I used the roller every night after applying moisturizer and roll 30 times on each of the following areas: cheekbones, jawlines and under eyes.

Below are the results after two weeks of treatment. It can be seen that my jawlines are more defined after the treatment and visible reduce of under eye bag puffiness.

Two weeks trial might be too short to show the dramatic improvement but it has convinced me that this is the product that I am soooo gonna put in the wish list for my beauty product purchase :D
